Fort Worth
We really had a great visit with Alivia during our extended stay in Fort Worth. It was cool that it worked out for Paula to be there on Mothers Day. Also an interesting time to be in town since it was finals week and lots of graduation parties in the neighborhood.
It was fun to see Alivia’s living arrangements and be apart of it. One of her roommates moved out, another one was leaving to study abroad in Rome while we were there We met the parents of two of her roommates and went to Lola’s for karoake with Bree’s parents after Mother’s Day Brunch with them prepared by Livi and Bree. Alivia cooked us a spaghetti and meatball dinner which we both enjoyed having her prepare for us. Another highlight to me was when she offered to show me how to operate the shower handle. It was a complex system that I certainly would have stumbled to figure out.
One day we hit the botanical gardens and they were beautiful. It took us a little over 2 hours to tour and we may have missed a few things. There was a consensus that the Japanese garden was a family favorite. Also, in May the gardens have a sculpture display where you could see the name of piece, artist, material, and price. We saw around 3 different turtle types, including snapping turtle and huge Koi fish. We had a guy with a security jacket come up to us and ask us if we were feeding the fish and we thought he was policing people. We were like no, not us and then he said, “well do you want to?” Literally thought we were in trouble, don’t underestimate the power of a security vest.
Another day we went the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. This was a really nicely done museum located in the Dickies complex about 4 miles from campus. We all thought the museum was tastefully done and learned a lot about the history of cowgirls. A sizeable group of students showed up about an hour into our visit. I thought it would be a big negative, but was happy to see the kids working together on an assignment and being respectful for the most part.
Our final activity was going to the Fort Worth zoo. Paula had planned on attending, but twisted her ankle on a walk to Lola’s karaoke night, so off Livi and I went. I have mixed feelings on zoos, and still do after visiting this one. I really enjoyed seeing the baby gorilla with its mom. Then I saw a gorilla regurgitate his food into his palm and the eat it again, twice. Sounds like a behavior captive gorillas end up with. We also saw an adorable baby elephant. The papa elephant apparently didn’t think his offspring was as cute as we did. While Alivia happened to be recording, the papa knocked his little guy right on his ass. One of those things you laugh at, but also think it’s mean.
We ate out a handful of times for pizza, sandos@Eatzy’s, tacos @Torchy’s, burritos @Maestros, sushi @Blue Fin, final outing for food was @ Lucy @Press Cafe. Paula and I did a nice bike ride one day through a number of really amazing neighborhoods. Lots of friendly hi’s, amazing houses, and fun loop ride. I know I’m forgetting more memorable times due to time passed, but can say we really had a great visit, the departure brought us to tears.
