Carlsbad Caverns

 Wow, we were blown away by the Carlsbad caverns.  Our drive there took us past Roswell where we were lucky to avoid any alien contact.  Once there, you take an elevator down 75 floors to the caverns.  All of the different formations were stunning, the ceiling height massive.  It was very peaceful down there as they asked everyone to use their library voices which all but a few did.  Really a magical fantasyland that I would highly recommend.  We had to hustle through a little due to the pets in the van.  We were relieved when we returned to see the inside temp was 4 degrees cooler than what the phone said and both pets were chillin.  Thankful to have the 2 ceiling fans in the van.

Our plan after Carlsbad was to go down to Big Bend National Park in the very south of Texas.  We started heading south and when we reached the interstate Paula and I were like do we really want to add 6 hours of driving to go somewhere where we hadn’t found a place to stay and we might find ourselves calloused to the beauty after the things we had already seen.  We decided to head straight to Alivia’s house in Fort Worth.  The delayed decision cost us an hour or two since we first headed south for a bit, but we were relieved and thankful we had come to that conclusion.  

When we arrived in Forth Worth we parked the van on the street that Livi lives on.  We then headed with Gus to a bar Alivia likes to go to on Tuesdays for Karaoke.  Livi and friends were very excited to see Gus, which has been a common theme (Poor Cheech).  After a long 10 hour day of driving and singing a karaoke song or two it was time to convert the van for sleeping.  A couple guys came out of the frat house we were parked in front of to see if we needed any help.  Had a fun conversation and then they warned it might get loud since it was almost the end of finals week.  About 30 minutes later, around 2:30am they were lighting off fireworks right by the van.  We moved the next day to other side of house for the rest of the 9 day stay.

Kingston, NB

After leaving Quebec we had planned on staying in Montreal the next night, but after driving into the city we weren’t feeling like we wanted to try and figure out another large city that wasn’t as cool as Quebec.  We headed southwest further to a smaller community named Kingston in New Brunswick.  We arrived on July 1st which is Canada Day, the same as our 4th of July.  The spot we found on Overlander had a nice bathroom, was right on Lake Ontario, and had a plug which I plugged our UPS battery and also the van into to bring up the charge since we decided to stay 2 nights.  We walked down to the park where the fireworks were going to be let off and first went to a place that was a $20 cover that included a drink with chips and salsa (Pace).  We sat down and waited to see if they could come up with a table for us to sit at.  After waiting for 20 minutes we changed venues to a place that wasn’t as crowded and didn’t have a cover charge.  It was a good fi...

Tavernier Florida - Florida Keys

 We made reservations at the Elks for 2 nights in Tavernier Fl. This was the most expensive Elks so far due to it being right on the beach.  When we arrived we met the host who help us get settled into our spot.  We couldn’t believe the view we had.  They had kayaks to rent, a big dock and a tiki hut. I couldn’t believe how many curly tailed lizards and iguanas were down here - ICK.  I did a pretty good job of getting over my fear of them because literally they were everywhere. That day Bryan took the paddle board out and I was too chicken and took a kayak out in the water.  We saw a nurse shark under the dock, manta ray, and several jelly fish. A couple came in a few hours later and they had a little girl (probably around 7) who soon became my new best friend.  She loved Gus and was super curious that we had a cat in the van. They had karaoke one night and of course I couldn’t resist and sang a couple songs.  Bryan came up with me for one duet. ...
